Before leaves fall, their green color often fades. Green comes from chlorophyll, the pigment needed for photosynthesis. When plants stop producing as much chlorophyll, other pigments become more visible. That is why autumn leaves may appear yellow, orange, or red before they drop.

With shorter days and cooler conditions, the plant gradually slows leaf activity, recovers nutrients, and then completes the separation process. Not every plant loses its leaves in autumn. Deciduous plants shed their leaves seasonally, while evergreen plants keep their leaves longer, often replacing them gradually rather than all at once. Evergreen leaves are usually built to last through tougher conditions, with structures that help reduce water loss.
