Lewisia, also known as bitterroot, grows best when its roots stay well-drained and its crown is protected from prolonged moisture. The plant forms compact rosettes of thick leaves and can produce colorful flowers in spring, with some garden-grown hybrids flowering again in late summer or early fall.


Good drainage, careful watering, suitable light, and protection from excessive winter moisture are the main points to manage.


Give Lewisia the Right Soil and Light


Lewisia needs gritty, sandy, or rocky soil that drains quickly and allows air around the roots. A cactus or alpine mix works well, while ordinary potting soil can be improved with coarse sand and perlite. For container growing, use a container with effective drainage and avoid letting excess water remain around the roots. In garden beds, raised locations and rocky areas can help water move away from the plant.


Light requirements depend on the conditions and variety. Lewisia can grow in partial shade, while hotter climates may require protection from strong afternoon sun to reduce leaf scorch. Bright light remains useful for flowering, but prolonged intense heat can stress the plant.

Watering requires more attention than a fixed schedule because soil, weather, season, and container conditions change how quickly the growing medium dries.

Avoid excessive fertilizer because it can weaken the plant. Remove spent flower stalks and yellow or soft leaves with care. Lewisia has a compact rosette so that rough handling can damage the plant.


Manage Seasons, Pests, and Propagation


Lewisia can remain evergreen in many climates, although growth may slow during hot summer conditions. In suitable conditions, it can overwinter in Zones 5–9 according to the supplied care guidance. Wet winter conditions are a greater concern than cold in poorly drained locations so that containers can be moved under cover or protected from heavy rain.


Space plants about 6–10 inches apart to maintain airflow and reduce excess moisture around the foliage. Containers also need enough room for each rosette to expand. Lewisia can be propagated from seed or by dividing established clumps after flowering. Seeds benefit from cool conditions for germination, making fall sowing suitable. Division requires care because damage to the crown can harm the plant.


Lewisia responds well to a dry, well-drained growing environment rather than frequent watering or consistently wet soil. Check the growing medium before watering, protect the crown from standing moisture, and adjust light and water as temperatures and seasonal growth change.
