A trip to Sigiriya should undoubtedly be on your schedule if you are visiting Sri Lanka.

This mountain, which has an interesting past, is located directly in the center of the jungle.

1. Climb Lion Rock

Lion Rock, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic landmarks. This stunning natural formation rises 200 meters (660 feet) above the surrounding plains. Between 477 and 495 AD, it served as the palace of King Kassapa, who famously built his royal residence atop the rock. Legends suggest the king had numerous romantic affairs here, and it’s said that he even had a swimming pool built on top of the rock for himself and his guests.

For history and adventure lovers, climbing Lion Rock is a must. A guided tour will walk you through the fascinating history, from the murals and lion's paws at the base of the rock to the serene gardens and moats that surround it.

2. Climb Pidurangala Rock at Sunrise

For those more interested in sweeping views than historical ruins, Pidurangala Rock offers an even more stunning experience than Lion Rock — especially at sunrise. The entrance fee is significantly lower, and the vantage point is perfect for capturing the iconic sight of Lion Rock rising dramatically from the jungle below. The climb takes about 20 to 30 minutes, with the final stretch requiring you to scramble over some large boulders. It's not overly difficult, provided you’re in decent physical shape, though it can be a bit challenging in parts.

3. Learn Sri Lankan Cooking with a Warm and Welcoming Family

For a truly authentic experience that also supports a local family, consider booking a cooking class with Kumara and his wife, Thanuja. They invite you into their home to teach you how to prepare a traditional Sri Lankan meal. Known for their incredible hospitality, Kumara and Thanuja will make you feel right at home as they share their knowledge of Sri Lankan cuisine and culture.

4. Stay in a Treehouse at Back of Beyond

Imagine waking up in the heart of the jungle, surrounded by the sounds of birds singing and monkeys swinging through the trees — pure paradise, right? At Back of Beyond, you can experience this dream by staying in charming treehouses. These unique accommodations feature no walls or doors, just a roof and a mosquito net, offering an authentic, almost outdoor sleeping experience.

5. Visit the Golden Temple of Dambulla

The iconic Golden Buddha statue at the entrance of the Golden Temple is a striking sight, but it’s the Cave Temple, located a bit higher up, that truly captivates visitors. From the outside, the white gates against the dark gray mountain are already breathtaking. However, stepping inside reveals vast natural chambers filled with numerous Buddha statues and vibrant murals.

6. Unique Overnight Stay on the Route from Sigiriya to Kandy

If you’re looking to experience authentic rural life in Sri Lanka, an overnight stay at Pradeep's family farm is a must. Pradeep, a primary school teacher, and his parents run Blue Mountains View, an organic farm located just an hour’s drive from Sigiriya, along the route to Kandy. Staying here feels like a warm embrace, leaving you with cherished memories of Sri Lankan hospitality.
